What Happens When A Pro Pedal Builder Builds a DIY Pedal Kit?
What Happens When a Pro Pedal Builder Builds a DIY Pedal Kit? If you ever wanted to know what a professional pedal builder would do differently with a DIY pedal kit compared to most others, or if you're into DIY pedal building yourself, you’ll love this. I’ll be using the StewMac Screamer kit and showing you just what I personally do if I buy a DIY “build your own pedal” type kit, how I approach the circuit, and just why I rarely, if ever, follow the exact instructions and instead I completely change it into something personalized, unique, and inspiring to play.
First, I’m going to get the schematic from the kit documents and decide just what I want to do differently. I’ll use a breadboard for circuit experimentation to do this.
_____________________________________________________________________
🔥My newest course, *“Complete Beginners Guide: How to design your own guitar pedal circuits”* will detail exactly how to do this, even if you have *zero experience with electronics* - I’ll teach you everything in easy to understand language, no math involved, and we’ll do it with a guitar in hand.

*Use coupon code ➡️ youtube15 ⬅️ to get an automatic 15% discount!*
_____________________________________________________________________
We’ll discuss how to recognize circuit blocks in order to do these types of changes. We'll look at examples like the Tube Screamer, Boss SD-1, LovePedal Eternity, and Earthquaker Devices Plumes for examples of 4 pedals with similar topologies that all sound completely different. We’ll also compare not only the circuitry of these pedals but also play them side by side for a sound comparison.
Then, it’s time to make the magic happen! I’ll start building the pedal and get to the end, but guess what? IT DOESN’T WORK! 🤦‍♂️That’s ok though - it’s a great chance to walk through troubleshooting the pedal and get it working.
Lastly, the play test! How does it sound compared to the breadboarded Prototype version?

Compression pedals can stir up strong opinions among guitar players. While essential in studios for polishing tracks and adding punch, some worry they hide a guitar's natural sound. Can a guitar pedal REALLY sound like a TUBE AMP?
Переглядів 78 тис.5 місяців тому
In today's episode, I'm taking you on a unique journey - a challenge I set for myself to see if I can emulate the warm, rich tones of a tube amp using nothing but solid state circuitry just like we use in analog guitar pedals. We start off with a nostalgic piece - the Crate V50, 5212, a budget tube amp that's been a trusty companion for many guitarists over the years. My mission? To replicate i...
Breathing new life into this old tube amp, the Palomino V16 from Crate
Переглядів 14 тис.6 місяців тому
In this video, I'll do a bit of work on my Crate V16 Palomino. Released in the early 2000s, this amp holds a special place in my heart for its unique blend of chiming cleans and gainy response, sort of reminding me of the classic Vox amps, but with a tighter bottom end. But even the best of gear can face the test of time. That's exactly what happened with my V16 - the potentiometers started cra...

Join me in this journey where I take an inexpensive $50 portable guitar amplifier and modify it into a stage-worthy powerhouse! Wampler's Two Most Misunderstood and Misused Pedals

got to ask... how does having symmetrical clippings, as opposed to a-symmetrical clipping, result in less of a clean blend? I would have though the extra diode that you added in series would have raised the forward voltage and reduced the amount of clipping that was taking place?

    count on your fingers 2, 4, 8, 16 ( doubling up from 2 ) , call a fifteen watt amp 4 fingers then... Pluss one for a tube amp.....five fingers, 5 x 3 db = +15 db ( pure coincidence ) Anyway: then take your guitar Speaker 1w/1m sensitivity ... say it's 97db for one speaker, add 3db for a second, and 6db for a fourth.....say two, 100db, add your ^ amp = 115db 115db Average, that's dimed , that's generally good for gig.

I wouldn't dream of telling you anything about how you should run pedals or stack drives, but for me personally I run my Tumnus Deluxe at the end of my drive chain rather than at the front. I run my Tumnus in a typical Klon mode with gain at about 10:00 and level at about 2:00, and let the Tumnus spread its buttery goodness all over everything else. And I leave my Tumnus on all the time unless I am just looking for super clean sparkly tone. In front of the Tumnus I have a custom Tube Screamer and a Boss SD2. When I want a lot of crunch I turn on the SD2 and when I want distortion I turn on the TS turned way up on the gain. And when I want nasty I turn on all 3. I think the Tumnus Deluxe EQ gives me the best tone control which is why I put it last in the chain, and then when I discovered I just like to leave it on all the time it made sense for me to leave it there. Of course, since I don't have a Pantheon my options are a little different than yours. Thanks for the video. You make great pedals and have a wonderful way of teaching to boot. And that you know who Tumnus is makes me especially happy. :)

If you want to go the Van Halen way, you have to place the phaser before the distortion. Since his distortion was coming from the amp and the phaser pedal was in front of his amp...that's the way to go.

Thanks for this helpful video! Don't know if I'm alone on this, but I am trying to put together a straight to the front ampless board with the Cory Wong compressor as the DI. Seems logical, since it will be after delay and reverb, to just use the boost function and only turn the compression on when the verb and delay are off. What I'm driving at here: a video focusing on different DI solutions would be very cool.

what is weird... i use an mxr brick to power everything. never had this noise until recently? its doing it thru all 3 of my pedals. so seems to point to a ground issue. the pedals did not come with a power adapter, so i do not have really anyway to troubleshoot this.

I build pedal kits for fun. I’ve done a few videos on it. The stew mac kits are pretty much pedal pcb with a different color and all of the components sourced for you. Another note, stewmac usually has higher quality pots and jacks over some of the competitors. In addition, you don’t have to do any build sheets and find all of your shit. Some people like doing that, spending time in small bear or tayda and finding their best deal for parts. Me, I don’t have time to fart around finding the best deal on caps from that site and resistors from this site. I like buying complete pedal kits that I can build like folks that do model cars and such. I think there is an absolutely great market for pedal builders to sell pedal kits of their pedals, EVEN AT A PREMIUM OVER THE PRODUCTION MODELS. I would pay to buy a tumnus that I could build. If I was a pedal builder I’d consider offering pedal kits. I do it for fun soldering stuff. I do amp and guitar repairs and I solder a lot. For me making pedals is fun. I gift them to friends or sometimes sell them to buy more kits.
